With a strong interest in the community, Jim has served on the Chilmark Conservation Commission, is currently the chair of the Housing Committee member where he served for the past 20 years and has fund raised for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, for 16 years. Jim has spearheaded multiple initiatives to find, purchase, develop and help create housing opportunities for people in need. An avid kayaker, fisherman, windsurfer and mountain biker Jim has paddled, biked and fished many of the most beautiful spots on the island appreciating the natural beauty. Jim has lived on or visited Martha's Vineyard since the age of three months when his family rented a cottage in Gay Head (now Aquinnah) His first memory was the arc of the three white lights and one red of the Fresnel lens of the Gay Head lighthouse, His family built a vacation home in Lobsterville in 1956 where he spent his childhood summers. After college and some time in NYC he spent his first winter on Marthas Vineyard in 1970 working on construction projects and becoming a yacht delivery captain shuttling back and forth between this island and several Caribbean ones followed by nearly 20 years based in the Caribbean sailing, boat building and in residential construction. From 1995 to 2001 he was the regional manager for an air ambulance company in Nassau, Bahamas. In 2001 Jim moved back to Marthas Vineyard, built a house in Aquinnah and started a new career in property management. He has been an associate at Feiner Real Estate since 2009. Jim has been married to Kathleen Smith for 37 years and has 2 sons, Nicholas 34 and Zachary, 33.
